Yes, that is a very common phishing technique used by cybercriminals, but you shouldn’t let your guard down when you are not at work. Here are a few suggestions on how to avoid cybercrime when you’re at home, when you’re traveling, or at the office. Cybercrime can happen anywhere.

  • Have separate devices for work and personal use.
  • Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) whenever possible to access employer systems/data.
  • Secure internet-capable devices. (smart speakers, appliances, baby monitors, etc.) Use strong, unique passwords whenever possible.

Avoiding Cybercrime When Traveling

  • Don’t use public Wi-Fi when accessing confidential info. Use a personal hotspot instead.
  • Keep devices accounted for & secure.
  • Disable automatic bluetooth pairing & auto-join unfamiliar Wi-Fi.
  • Don’t use borrowed chargers or public charging stations.

Avoiding Cybercrime Physical Security

  • Never use unknown USB devices.
  • Always lock your computer.
  • Keep confidential information secure – use privacy screens & headphones, if necessary.
  • Don’t allow people you don’t know to follow you into work.
